Time Warner DVR vs. Tivo

”Tivo

I am a Time Warner Digital Cable subscriber, and I am using the DVR (I subscribe to the Digipic 2000 plan). I am currently charged roughly $12 per month for usage of the DVR. My wife can’t do without it. It makes recording programs extremely easy, and the channel guide makes things convenient. After sitting through a brief infomercial on the Tivo system, I have to wonder if it might be cost effective to just buy a Tivo system and return the DVR system. I am not sure if the whole channel guide setup will work. I am going to look further into this, and welcome comments pertaining to this.

Update:

I emailed Time Warner with my questions, and this was their response:

Thank you for writing Time Warner Cable Customer Service,

Digital Video Recorders not provided by Time Warner Cable do work with our service. Please note that if you currently have a cable box provided by us, the cable box needs to be on the channel you wish to record.

Alternatively, the DVR service provided by Time Warner Cable has a dual tuner cable box built in. This means that you will be able to record one program while watching another and still have DVR service functionality on the program that you are watching. You will also be able to record two programs at the same time or be able to record two programs while watching a pre-recorded program. The DVR box even includes Picture-In-Picture functionality. This means that you can use the DVR box’s built-in Picture-In-Picture function even if your television does not have Picture-In-Picture capability. You will also have access to our On Screen Channel Guide, which makes scheduling your recordings elementary. You can schedule one-time recordings, or schedule recordings for an entire series. For additional information about the DVR service provided by Time Warner Cable, you can visit our web site at .

I am still pondering making a switch, because I have seen a lot of infomercials lately pushing the Tivo system and offering a lot of rebates. I will update as necessary.
