Today I’ll square off the new soy milk, otherwise known as Silk against the traditional 2% white milk.
I guess I should start with the taste. It is rare for me to just sit there and drink white milk, so I wouldn’t sit back and enjoy a glass of silk either.
My initial impression if Silk was that it doesn’t really taste like milk. It is vanilla flavored, and really didn’t taste that bad. I also found that tastes pretty good when you add chocolate flavoring, such as Ovaltine or Nesquick. I poured it over my bowl of Cheerios and decided to have another bowl it tasted so good. Overall, the taste was better than I had expected. Drinking Silk is nothing to be afraid of.
Now for the nutrition. I put together the nutritional label face-off chart for your viewing pleasure.

Hands down, Silk was the winner of this one. I would recommend Silk as an alternative to milk, but not a substitute. I don’t think you can use silk in a lot of recipies and expect the same result. However, I’m not an expert.

my friend had to go this route because of a loved one who has MS- he wants to eat the same stuff as her. He said it took him so long to get used to chugging down a glass of soy milk in the morning. BLECH! he lost 15+ pounds on his healthy diet though. His cooking/baking wasn’t that bad.

TG, I was very surprised with the taste of this stuff. Especially f you add something like ovaltine in it, it’s quite tasty!

Now you should try “Rice Dream”… When I was on my healthy- running 3-5 times a week- swimming alternativly- for 3-7 miles- I drank Rice Dream/ ate it in my cereal. I found it to be less “thick” and heavy than the Soy. I lost a lot of weight with that lifestyle. Now if I could only get it back!!!

In college, I heard a lot of arguments agains Soy period! Almost like a conspiracy theory. The governement sending tons of soy products around the world as food aid, only to be causing all kind of health problems.
Here are a couple articles on the subj:

Actually, you can subsitute just about any recipe that calls for milk with soymilk. I’ve never had a problem with it though. It’s a great subsitute. There’s also “plain” which is a little closer to regular milk, but if you want to chug it for the nutrients, get Silk Chocolate Soymilk – very tasty.
I’m glad you came to the conclusion you did; Silk is much healthier, better for the environment, and of course the animals, than traditional milk.

Thanks Sam, I’m glad you liked it! If you went with the chocolate, wouldn’t you be cheapening the whole point of drinking soy milk to begin with? Unless, of course, you are in it to somehow make things better for animals?

If you know some older Asians, ask *them* about soy milk as “doh jong yo tyau”. It’s a Sunday breakfast treat of dipping fried long hunks of batter in sweetened warm soy milk. Obviously not healthy, but if you’re gonna add chocolate flavoring, try it the “original” way!

I been drinking soymilk for acouple of years now, notice the difference in my health. Don’t have hot flashes or panick attacks anymore. Silk soymilk has vitamins. At one time stop drinking silk and my symptoms came back. Had to go back to Silk soymilk.
